What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact, full-body workout that concentrates on strengthening and stabilising the body, while stretching and elongating muscles.

This is done through slow, precise movements and breath control so that you can move efficiently while improving your posture, flexibility and mobility. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's, he claimed that this form of exercise develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, and invigorates the mind. It is vital that we have healthy spines, flexible joints and strong cores if we want to stand more confidently, breathe more deeply, and live more actively. Pilates will always challenge you to stretch further than you think you can!

Founded in 2009, Woodstock Pilates is a Body Control Pilates and BootyBarre certified studio, operating out of Cape Town, South Africa. With classes offered in Woodstock and the City, group, semi-private and private sessions are small and intimate in nature, and are offered to all levels including beginners, intermediate and advanced. Our goal is to create a safe environment to heal and strengthen, one that is personalized around the particular needs of each client with an emphasis on care, rehabilitation and strengthening. We are passionate about bodies moving correctly and without pain, and believe that correct movement and posture, and consistent practice, really do change everything.

REFORMER

The Pilates Reformer is a machine that offers resistance and assistance, allowing you to take your body to the next level. 

REBOUNDING

Rebounding is a cardio-forward workout, rooted in jumping and moving on a mini-trampoline. It is one of the quickest ways to rebuild muscle mass and improve overall strength and fitness levels, because the body works twice as hard to defy gravity (as well as the forces of acceleration and deceleration) when bouncing which has an impact on every cell, muscle and organ in the body.

PILATES SUSPENSION METHOD

Pilates Suspension Method (PSM) takes elements of both Pilates Mat and Equipment exercises and performs them on the suspension trainer. The exercise promotes challenging movements that increase body resistance, balance, and strength, benefiting numerous body regions.

VINYASA YOGA

Vinyasa Yoga can be described as movement linked with breath. It’s an energetic and dynamic practice, and our style of Vinyasa builds both strength and flexibility through intelligently and anatomically-minded sequences that elevate the heart rate for a physical work-out whilst helping students to slip into a moving meditation that benefits the body and mind.

Gayle is a qualified IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) teacher and has previously run dance studios in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. After attending her first few Pilates sessions and realising how effective this form of exercise was for the rehabilitation of her old dancing injuries, she trained and qualified as a Body Control Pilates Instructor in 2009. Gayle feels a sense of responsibility to pass on the knowledge and body awareness that she has learned so that others can heal, strengthen and benefit in the same way that she has. She has a complete belief in the transformative power of Pilates and brings this passion into each and every class. She also collects miniature Schnauzers for fun.
